Music has the power to foster social skills, improve speech and language delays, elicit emotions and allow for connection. Music therapy uses the power of music to support individuals in various stages and phases of their lives. Accredited music therapists (MTAs) support people to reach their individualized therapeutic goals. Music therapy can now be found in a variety of settings such as long-term care homes, schools, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and in private home visits. MTAs require a minimum bachelor’s degree, 1000-hour internship, as well as passing a board certification exam. To create goals a music therapist will first assess a client and then will create a treatment plan based on each individual and their specific needs. Music therapy can address a wide variety of needs. For example, a goal in the social domain may include appropriate communication with peers or improving interaction abilities. A music therapist may use music to help improve memory and attention to tasks and increase the ability to identify and express emotions. Music therapy also can be used to decrease pain and aid in motor skills and mobility. Best of all, music therapy requires no musical ability to receive its benefit. At Dominelli School of Music, we offer private and group music therapy sessions. A private music therapy session can offer a space for a client to create trust and familiarity with a therapist and to work on goals one on one. Group music therapy sessions allow clients to create bonds, receive encouragement, and build community and connection. This year, these sessions will be facilitated by a music therapy intern under the supervision of an accredited music therapist. Melissa is a music therapy intern and student who has just finished completing her classes at Capilano University in North Vancouver. While in Vancouver, Melissa had the privilege of doing music therapy practicums with seniors, children with disabilities, and adults with brain and spinal cord injuries. Melissa is now completing her 1000-hour internship, at Dominelli School of Music and with seniors at a care home, before taking her board certification exam next summer and finishing her degree in music therapy. Melissa will be supported by Nadine Veroba, Accredited Music Therapist. To schedule private music therapy sessions, contact us at 780-488-8515 or This email address is being protected from spambots.
